Standardization

Organic AsparagusThe Napa County Agricultural Commissioner is entrusted with the enforcement of laws to maintain standards of quality for unprocessed fruits, nuts, vegetables, eggs, honey and certain other agricultural commodities. To ensure these products meet California’s quality standards, they are inspected at various points in their distribution for defects such as insect damage, frost damage, rot, sunburn or physical damage resulting from improper handling and distribution. Products are also checked to ensure they comply with maturity standards, and are packed and shipped in standardized containers with labels containing appropriate producer information. The use of approved or "standard containers" with labels protects the consumer from fraud and deception and assures that agricultural businesses are afforded a fair and equitable opportunity to market their products. Standard containers also protect the grower from theft and the illegal distribution of agricultural products.
