Autopsy Requests

Occasionally the next of kin requests to have an autopsy performed to obtain information that may be helpful to other family members regarding their personal health history or other personal reasons. Section 27520 Government Code requires the Coroner's Office to perform an autopsy if the next of kin makes a demand in writing. The law also mandates that the requestor pay for all costs associated with their demand. Doctor Joseph Cohen performs forensic autopsies for the Sheriff's Office. Please contact the Coroner secretary at 707 253-4200 to obtain further information (including costs) regarding private autopsy requests.
