Use of Force

Fiscal Year 2010-2011, continued to show improvement in all use of force categories. The tables below outline the reduction in total use of force, inmate versus inmate assaults and inmate versus staff assaults.  Through the improvement in training and the evolution of the Special Housing Unit (SHU) and the Classification Team (created in late calendar year 2009), NCDC has been able to create a system which reduces the risk to its staff and inmates.

The improved training in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, inmate management and staff communication along with the continuous improvement of classification techniques, NCDC is continuing to move toward its ongoing goal of providing an environment that maximizes the security to its Officers and appropriately houses inmates to mitigate the transferring of contraband, gang recruitment, or collective inmate actions (i.e. groups of inmates collaborating to defy staff directives).
