Who We Are
The Library Foundation has a special public-private relationship with the community. It provides individuals and groups a means by which they can give monetary support to one of our most cherished treasures, the Library. The Napa City-County Public Library Foundation was initiated in 1984 by a bequest of $87,000 from Grace Kermode. In 1996, the Library Foundation received another generous bequest of $475,000 from the estate of Jess and Mary Doud. The Library Foundation exists to raise and manage funds to be used solely for the augmentation of public funds in the operation and expansion of library services.
To the greatest extent possible, contributions to the Library Foundation are invested in a professionally managed portfolio. Investment income is used to fund or to help fund specific library needs.
The Library Foundation is directed and operated by dedicated citizens who volunteer their services.

What We Support
Our Napa City-County Libraries provide people of all ages a source of life-long learning and enjoyment. The public libraries are an important source of community pride. Our community library system is a public institution which provides benefits to all people, either directly or indirectly, and receives its basic support from public funds. The Napa City-County Library system serves the cities of Napa, American Canyon, Calistoga, and Yountville and the unincorporated areas of Napa County. In these days of constraints on tax funds for certain public services, the library is unable to meet the increasing demand for library services without supplemental funding.
What We Have Done
The Library computer system and online databases are available 24/7 on the Internet.
A Books-by-Mail service has been made available to distant patrons and homebound individuals. The Library Foundation enabled this service with a $3,000 grant.
Visionary Voices programs bring renowned speakers to Napa to present informative and entertaining events. The Library Foundation provides financial support and active participation in these events.
Children's story times have doubled in frequency and attendance, instilling the love of reading in our youngest patrons.
New programs for teenagers have drawn increasing numbers of teens to the library to get homework help, to use the library's special databases and to rekindle their reading habit.
Current Needs
Your contributions to the Library Foundation will help the Library to:
- Continue providing access to subscription databases on the Internet that would otherwise be inaccessible to the community.
- Strengthen library services for children and young adults. Present literary and cultural programs.
- Support selected library projects that are beyond the reach of the Library's annual budget.
For Your Consideration
There are a variety of actions one may consider in order to make a gift to the Library Foundation. Monetary gifts may be designated for a specific capital project.
- Make a Memorial Gift or a Recognition Gift to the Library Foundation that will preserve a memory and bring enjoyment to the community.
- Include the Library Foundation in your will or as a beneficiary to your life insurance policy to reduce your taxable estate.
- Make a gift of a cash value life insurance policy to reduce your taxable estate and to obtain immediate income tax benefits.
- Make a gift of stock or property that has appreciated in value. You are entitled to use the fair market value for tax purposes subject to certain IRS limitations.
- Make a gift of stock or property by a donation through a charitable remainder trust. This can provide immediate tax benefits, steady income from the trust and provide support for the Library Foundation.
- Arrange a gift annuity which is both an investment in a secure future for the donor as well as a gift to support the Library Foundation.
The Library Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. You may wish to consult your attorney or tax advisor regarding these considerations.
