 Safe and Legal Disposal of Home Generated Sharps

  • Beginning Sept. 1, 2008, the California Medical Waste Management Act prohibits the disposal of home generated sharps in trash or recycling containers.
  • The Napa County Public Health Division is a no-cost collection location for sharps ONLY:
    • Sharps must be transported in an approved sharps container, which may be obtained from a physician or pharmacy.
    • A tightly sealed, leak and puncture resistant container with lid is an acceptable alternative.
    • Please label container as “sharps.”
    • Sharps transported in plastic bags or paper bags or other non-puncture resistant container will be refused.

Napa County Public Health will accept properly packaged sharps: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

It is against the law to leave any material after hours.
