Volunteer Program
Napa County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center Volunteer Program
Thank you for considering our volunteer program! We know your time is valuable and appreciate your interest in wanting to help our shelter animals. Volunteers play an important role in the socialization and enrichment of our shelter’s animals. Additionally, volunteers are instrumental in our foster and outreach programs. Without the assistance of volunteers, many of our programs would not function.
Volunteer Age
To be a volunteer at the shelter if you are between 10 and 17 years old, a parent must accompany you. In this case, both the parent and child must fill out a volunteer application and both must attend the volunteer orientation held monthly.
Volunteer Manual & Application
The Volunteer Manual (PDF) provides an overview of how the operation is run and what services volunteers can provide.
If you wish to be a volunteer, you must read the Volunteer Manual. After reading the manual, please complete the Volunteer Application (PDF). You must send in or drop off your application and we will make arrangements for you to be trained with one of our lead volunteers.
Additional Information
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the animal shelter or come visit with one of the lead volunteers.

Foster Program
Every year, our shelter handles an average of 300 animals that are not ready for adoption due to age, health or behavior. The types of animals that are fostered can range from kittens to senior animals. Becoming a foster parent is another great way to volunteer at the Napa County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center where we like to call fostering “volunteering from home." Maybe your work schedule does not allow to physically be at the shelter or your kids do not meet the age requirement just yet. By participating in our Foster Program, you are giving love and shelter to many stray pets that need some extra TLC.
Volunteer Requirements
All households within Napa County are invited to participate in our shelter’s Foster Program. Anyone under the age of 18 would need parental consent and participation, as these are animals you would be taking home. If you are a renter, you would also need landlord approval.
Foster Program Manual, Application, and Agreement
The Foster Program Manual provides an overview of the program. All people interested in fostering would need to read the manual, submit a completed application and an agreement, and attend an orientation. These steps serve as part of the training process for learning about our fostering program.
If you are interested in fostering, please read the manual, then complete and submit the application and foster agreement EITHER in person to the Napa County Animal Shelter OR email them as attachments to [email protected]. Once we receive your application, a staff member will go over some details with you and make sure you understand the foster agreement. At that time you will also be given information about the next available foster orientation so that you can sign up.
