Special Events on Napa County Roads

Chapter 10.24 of the County Code governs the conduct of special events on public roads in the unincorporated areas of Napa County. These include marathons, bicycling events, triathlons, and more.

In February 2016, the Board of Supervisors updated these regulations and in March 2017, the Board adopted some minor cleanup updates.

Key Provisions

Key provisions of the ordinance include:

  • A maximum of 2 events per month, and 1 per weekend, on any arterial road
  • A minimum of 1,000 participants to permit closure of any arterial road
  • A system of reserving dates a year in advance
  • Placement of message boards along event course for all events
  • Relay events not permitted on Highway 29 or Silverado Trail north of Trancas Street (north end of Napa)
  • Development of a formalized complaint process (PDF)
