Household Hazardous Wastes

Many products found in your home contain hazardous substances that can potentially harm you or the environment when mishandled or improperly disposed.  Hazardous products become hazardous “wastes” when we want to get rid of them.  Either they are unusable or we don’t need them anymore.  It is illegal and unsafe to dispose of household hazardous waste in the trash, on the ground, or down storm drains.

Common Household Products

Surprisingly, many common household products are hazardous. Such hazardous wastes include, but are not limited to: polishes and cleaners, drain openers, lighter fluids, unwanted medications, cosmetics, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, pesticides, pool chemicals, latex and oil-based paints, paint thinner and strippers, wood preservatives, grease and rust solvents, wood and metal cleaners, used oil and oil filters, antifreeze, transmission fluids, gasoline and fuel additives, carburetor cleaners, glues, cements, photo chemicals and more.

Where to Dispose of Household Hazardous Wastes

Fortunately, there are many locations in Napa County where residents can dispose of household hazardous wastes for free.  Please go to Napa Recycling and Waste Services' household hazardous waste page for more information on the collection facilities in your area and the types of wastes accepted.
