
The Investigations Bureau is responsible for conducting criminal investigations and operation of the crime lab. A Lieutenant is responsible for the overall management of this bureau. Other assigned personnel include a Detective Sergeant, seven Detectives, three ID Technicians, and a Secretary.
Crimes Investigated
Generally, detectives perform follow up investigations and provide support to uniformed personnel on cases that are resource intensive or require specialized expertise. Examples would include:
- All Criminal Offenses Committed Within County Correctional Facilities
- Child Abuse
- Elder and Adult Dependent Abuse
- Kidnapping
- Manslaughter
- Mayhem
- Murder
- Neglect
- Questionable Deaths
- Sexual Assaults
- Major Thefts of Property or Funds
- Computer Crimes
- Runaway Juveniles/ Adult Missing Persons
Napa County Major Crimes Task Force
The Sheriff's Office is committed to participating in the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force, therefore all of the investigative personnel participate in that task force. The Task Force is assembled whenever one of the participating law enforcement agencies requests assistance for investigating a major crime such as a homicide. The following law enforcement agencies are participants in and provide personnel to the Major Crimes Task Force:

- Napa County Sheriff's Office
- Napa County District Attorney's Office
- Napa Police Department
- St. Helena Police Department
