The mission of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office Problem Oriented Policing Program is to employ non-traditional police methods, in collaboration with our partners within the local community, to address those issues that affect the quality of life of the citizens of the unincorporated areas of Napa County.
The Theory Behind Problem Oriented Policing
Traditionally, law enforcement agencies have been reactive to problems within their communities. In other words, a citizen would report a problem, and an officer would respond to that particular incident. This method can be effective, but at times can fail to address the root issues that cause the citizen to report the problem in the first place. The theory of POP takes traditional law enforcement further, training select deputies to assess problem areas and engage community stakeholders such as the public, community leaders, business organizations and other government services in finding long term solutions that address the root issues behind law enforcement calls for service, thereby increasing the quality of life for those living in the effected areas. For more information, visit the Center for POP website.
Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Investigations
A Drug Endangered Child is a person under 18 years who lives in or is exposed to an environment where drugs, including pharmaceuticals are present. As a result of such exposure, these children experience or are at high risk or experiencing physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; harm; or neglect. To learn more about Drug Endangered Children, visit the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children website.
Neighborhood Watch Program
We will help you with coordinating assistance from national or local neighborhood watch programs; Attend meetings in your neighborhood and offer safety & crime prevention tips, how-to information and conduct Q&A sessions. For more information, visit the National Neighborhood Watch Institute and National Crime Prevention Council sites.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
CPTED is the proper design and effective use of the built environment which may lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and an improvement of the quality of life. We offer plan reviews for new construction or revitalization.
We have the ability to increase the patrol level in neighborhoods or areas suffering from an increase in crime or for a specific event without impacting patrol levels in other neighborhoods.
We participate in numerous community events including: Shop with a Cop, NVUSD Family Festival, Relay for Life, Dia de la Familia, National Night Out, St. Helena Fire Department Open House and Coffee with a Cop.
We provide training sessions and presentations to the community on topics such as Active Shooter training, Personal Safety, Anti-Bullying and Red Ribbon week.
Is your business safe? We can conduct site surveys and provide crime prevention tips, point out potential problem areas and offer solutions based on experience and training.
Sub-Standard Property Abatement
Many times poorly maintained properties attract undesirable consequences such as graffiti, illegal dumping and other crime. We work with other county agencies to clean up nuisance properties as quickly as possible. If you have such a property in your neighborhood, drop us a line. For more information visit Napa County Code Section 1.20.022.
