The course covers several topics that include safe weapon handling, legal responsibilities, fair chase, game identification, wildlife law, as well as ecological and environmental awareness, preservation and conservation.
  • The main focus of the Hunter Education course is safety and ethics.
  • The course is required by the California Department of Fish and Game for all new hunters before they can obtain a hunting license.
  • Experienced hunters will also benefit from the course as it provides a good refresher of the basics. It is also an outstanding opportunity for family learning.

The Napa Sheriff's Office is offering the course free of charge to all participants. There is no minimum age requirements for participants. However, the course involves sitting in a classroom environment for several hours, as well as reading and material comprehension, and independent home study. It is recommended that no one under the age of 12 participate.

Any participant under the age of 16 is required to have a parent attend all sessions. The course is approximately 16 hours in duration and will be conducted over 4 evening sessions. Classes are offered 2-3 times a year based on interest. The course is also available to group organizations.

Online Course

An online course is available through the Department of Fish and Game website (DFG). The online course requires a 4-hour session with a certified instructor. The Sheriff's Office also offers the 4-hour block of instruction several times a year based on interest. The DFG Hunter Education page can be accessed.

Traditional Class

Although convenient, the online course is not for everyone. First time and younger hunters will benefit more from the full course as there is more interaction with instructors, and more time to answer questions.
