Veterans Benefits

There are many benefits that veterans may be able to access. The Napa County Veterans Service Office conducts a monthly orientation to veterans benefits on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning at 1 p.m., at 650 Imperial Way. Reservations may be made by calling 707-253-4558. Here’s a list of the most common benefits:

Burial & Death Benefits

Burial benefits available include a gravesite in any of the Veterans Affairs' (VA) 135 national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family. Some Veterans may also be eligible for Burial Allowances. Cremated remains are buried or inurned in national cemeteries in the same manner and with the same honors as casketed remains. Access the National Cemetery Administration page for more information.

VA Compensation Benefits

Very similar to Worker’s Comp, the VA can provide monetary compensation and other benefits for mental and / or physical diseases or disabilities determined to be “service-connected”. Learn more about VA compensation benefits.

VA Pension Benefits

(Non-service-connected) based on need (income limit) for veterans who served during a wartime period. Death pension for surviving spouse of deceased veteran with wartime service may be eligible for pension based on need. Find more information about pension benefits.

VA Dependents & Survivors Benefits

Dependents or survivors of a disabled or deceased veteran may be eligible for benefits, including children of Vietnam veterans who have been diagnosed with Spina Bifida. View more information on VA dependents and survivors benefits.

VA Dependent Tuition Waiver

Children of veterans with a disability that is considered to be “service-connected” by the Department of Veterans Affairs (“The VA”) may qualify for waiver of tuition and other State-wide fees at any State Community College, State College and even State Universities. The veteran does not need to be in receipt of compensation - a “zero% rating” is sufficient to qualify. A zero% rating can often be granted for something as simple as hearing loss caused by military service or even a scar received during military service. Eligibility is based on the previous year’s income of the student. This waiver could also apply to spouses and children of veterans with a 100% disability rating, or who died from a service-connected illness or injury. In this case, there are no income limits, but age limits do apply for the children of the veteran. Download the Waiver (PDF).

VA Education Benefits

Veterans with a service-connected disability that impairs their ability to continue in their current profession may be eligible for vocational rehabilitation through the VA. Dependents of veterans who are rated 100% disabled (permanent and total) may be eligible for Dependents Education Assistance, similar to the GI Bill. Find more information on education benefits.

VA Government Life Insurance

Veterans who are rated by the VA for a new disability may be eligible for a life insurance policy issued by the VA. Many veterans also have an existing life insurance policy from their military service. Our office can help with applications and to determine if there are any existing policies.” See more details on Government Life Insurance.

Veterans Health Administration

Veterans and some dependents may be eligible for health care benefits including treatment, eye glasses, hearing aids and prescription refills, often with little or no co-pay. View the health benefits offered to veterans.

Veterans Homes of California

Veterans Homes are first and foremost places where veterans go to live. They may offer complete medical and dental care amidst the amenities of a small town atmosphere. Residents may participate in on- or off-campus activities and civic affairs, or attend veterans service organization meetings. Currently, Veterans Homes are located in Yountville, Barstow, Ventura, Lancaster, West Los Angeles, Fresno, Redding, and Chula Vista. We do not process applications but are happy to assist with completion of application packages as needed. Access for more information.
