Candidate Filing

Candidate Interest

Interested in running for county or statewide office and live in Napa County? Potential candidates should email [email protected] to find out how to file campaign finance documents as these must be filed before campaign activities can begin. Please include a copy of the Candidate Preliminary Information form. These forms as well as a list of important dates and local candidate guides are also available at the bottom of this page. Statewide candidates should contact [email protected] for additional information.

Municipal, school district, and special district governing board seats follow a different calendar; these seats appear on the general election ballot and the filing period does not begin until July 2024. For municipal offices, please check with the appropriate municipal clerk in May 2024. For school board and special district offices, please check with [email protected] in May 2024.

Candidate Filing

Initial candidate filing documents are available starting September 14, 2023. To schedule a candidate filing appointment, please call 707-299-1470 or email [email protected]. Once an appointment is set, the candidate will be sent a meeting notice via email with instructions for their appointment. All appointments will be made during the nomination period for that particular office.

The candidate will receive an email with the Preliminary Information Form; this form is also available at this link. The candidate must complete the Preliminary Information Form and return it to the Election Division at [email protected]. Once the candidate returns the Preliminary Information Form, another email will be sent containing all necessary candidate forms. All forms must be completed prior to the appointment. If the candidate is sending another person to submit or pick up any documents, they must also complete the Candidate's Authorization Form with the name of the person acting on their behalf.

A candidate may electronically submit their completed documents to the Election Division so that a staff member may begin the review and verification process as soon as is practicable. However, in order to be considered a qualified candidate for the office in which they seek, the completed documents with original signatures must be received by the Election Division at the scheduled appointment time.

If a candidate does not submit all required documents at the time of their scheduled appointment, they will only have until the close of nomination for that office to do so. If the forms are not completed by that time the candidate will not be qualified for that office.

Candidate Forms and Guides

The links below do not include the official documents required for filing. Candidates will receive their custom forms once the Preliminary Information Form has been submitted to [email protected] and the filing period has opened. Candidates filing for offices not handled by the Election Division should contact those offices directly as their forms and procedures may be different.
