Asset Limit Changes

Effective July 1, 2022, the asset limit increased. Some people are already eligible to a type of Medi-Cal called MAGI (Modified Adjusted Gross Income) Medi-Cal that does not consider assets. Older adults, along with blind or disabled individuals are screened for a different type of Medi-Cal with limits to how much property they can retain and still be eligible. The current Non-MAGI Medi-Cal property limits are:

  • 1 person: $130,000
  • 2 people: $195,000
  • Add $65,000 for each additional person in the household.

Effective January 1, 2024, the asset limit will be eliminated for Non-MAGI programs.

Postpartum Expansion

Pregnant individuals will now receive 12 months of postpartum care. Once Medi-Cal eligibility is established, reporting a pregnancy will trigger protections to ensure coverage will continue regardless of changes throughout the pregnancy and 12 months after the end of the pregnancy. Medi-Cal will cover the full breadth of medically necessary services regardless of immigration status during this time.
