How to Apply for Medi-Cal and Other Medical Assistance 

Three Easy Ways to Apply

Documentation Needed to Process an Application

  • Identification: (Driver’s license, California identification card, passport, birth certificates or proof of immigration status)
  • Proof of Residency: (Rent or mortgage receipt or utility bill)

You May Also Be Asked to Provide Information About

  • Proof of Income: (Pay stubs, Social Security award letter, child support and alimony, unemployment / disability or veterans benefits)
  • Resources: (Checking and savings account statements, life insurance, vehicle registrations)

What to Expect After You Apply

  • Applicants are assigned to a Eligibility Worker
  • A request for more information will be sent out by mail if we did not receive the proper documentation to process your application.
  • If all of the required documents are received with the application a Notice of Action letter will be received by mail to let you know if benefits have been approved or denied.
  • Turn-a-round time: Napa County has up to 45 days to process an application for Medi-Cal / CMSP. If the applicant requests a disability determination, the process may take up to 90 days depending upon how quickly the applicant provides information and the doctors and hospitals submit medical records.
  • If the applicant disagrees with any action taken by the County, there is an appeals process known as a State Hearing. Look on the back of the Notice of Action for information on how to request a State Hearing.
