Borrowing, Returning & Renewing
At your library, friendly, knowledgeable professionals will help you find the information you need! On our website you can search the online catalog, place holds, search databases, enjoy eBooks and eAudio books, read our online newsletter, and more. While viewing your library account online, you may also check due dates of items borrowed, status of items on hold, amounts of any fines due, and renew your checked-out materials. Some restrictions may apply.
Always bring your library card to the library. Report lost/stolen cards immediately by calling 707-253-4243.
- Who may have a library card?
-
Anyone with photo identification and proof of address may be issued a free library card. Those under 18 years old need a parent or guardian’s signature. Temporary cards, for those lacking proper documentation, allow checkout of 5 items.
- What’s my borrowing limit?
-
Limits include:
- 50 items per card
- 5 Hot Picks per card
- How do I track due dates?
-
Due dates are issued at checkout. They are printed on your receipt and available online.
- What about renewals?
-
If there are no holds on an item, it may be renewed twice. Library items will be automatically renewed as long as no holds have been placed on them by other library customers and they’re items that can be renewed (see auto-renewal FAQs). Manual renewals may be made at the library, by phone (707-253-4220), or online. Hot Picks are not renewable.
- Where do I return items?
-
Return items at the library desk or book drop. If the book drops are full, please do not leave items outside. The library is not responsible for any damage to equipment caused by CDs or DVDs.
- Why have a clear library record?
-
Renewing or returning items on time means faster library service. Parents or guardians are responsible for children’s materials and fines.
- How long may I keep items?
-
All items may be checked out for 21 days.
- What are the fines for overdue items?
-
The Napa County Library is proud to no longer charge fines on overdue materials.
- What are the service fees?
-
The services* fees include:
- Color copy/print: $0.50 per page
- Grayscale copy/print: $0.10 each per page
- Inter-Library Loan: $5 per item
- Lost /destroyed items: cost of item
- Library card replacement: Free
*Please note that not all services are available at all branches.
Auto-Renewal
This convenient service will automatically renew your eligible items on the due date to give you a few extra days to finish that last chapter or re-read a picture book one last time without the worry of overdues or fines.
Library items will be automatically renewed two (2) days before the due date as long as there are no holds on the item and the item can be renewed. Some additional restrictions apply. Please read below for additional details about this service.
- Do I need to do anything?
-
No. Auto-renew has been enabled for all Napa County Library cardholders.
- Will all my items be renewed?
-
Library items will be automatically renewed as long as no holds have been placed on them by other library customers and they’re items that can be renewed.
- What items are eligible for auto-renew?
-
Items that are normally available for manual renewal through My Account are eligible for auto-renewal.
- What items cannot be auto-renewed?
-
Hot Picks, Interlibrary Loans, and items that have reached their maximum number of renewals or are already overdue will not be auto renewed.
- Will I receive a notification on what has been auto renewed?
-
You will only be notified about what has been auto renewed if you receive email notifications. Change your preference for receiving library notices in My Account.
- Will I be notified if an item can't be renewed?
-
If an item can't be renewed, you will be notified of its due date if you receive email notifications. Change your preferences for receiving library notices in My Account.
- Do I lose days on the auto-renewal?
-
No. The due date advances the appropriate amount based on the material type and the original due date. For example, if you have a book due on the 3rd, the system will send you an email two days in advance (on the 1st) letting you know that your item's due date has been extended to the 24th.
- Can I still renew manually?
-
Yes. In addition to having auto-renew in place, you will still be able to renew online, by phone (707-253-4220) or in person.
