How Long Does the Office of Vital Statistics Keep Birth & Death Certificates?

The Office of Vital Statistics keeps birth and death certificates for one year. If you would like to obtain a birth or death certificates older than one year, please contact County Clerk Recorders Office office Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Who Can Obtain Copies of Birth & Death Certificates?

In the State of California, authorized copies of vital records can only be obtained by the individual named on the record, parents of the individual named on the record, and certain other individuals and entities specified in law.
