Who Can Obtain Copies of Birth & Death Certificates

In the State of California, authorized copies of vital records can only be obtained by the individual named on the record, parents of the individual named on the record, and certain other individuals and entities specified in law. All other requestors can only obtain informational copies. Find out more about who can obtain copies of birth and death certificates.

Time Frame Information



As of January 1, 2014 certified copies of the following certificates will cost:

  • Birth certificates $28
  • Death certificates $21
  • Fetal death certificates $18
  • Download a flier (PDF) with information on the $5 state mandated fee increase (English and Spanish)

Burial Permits

As of January 1, 2014:

  • Burial permits $12

Medical Marijuana Identification (ID) Card

As of April 1, 2008, the cost for services are as follows:

  • Medical Marijuana Identification Card (Non MediCal) $124
  • Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MediCal) $62

Methods of Payment

As of May 1, 2008, the Office of Vital Statistics will no longer accept cash. Acceptable forms of payment include:

  • Check
  • Money order
  • Payments should be made to "Napa County"

How Long Does the Office of Vital Statistics Keep Birth & Death Certificates?

The Office of Vital Statistics keeps birth and death certificates for one year. If you would like to obtain a birth or death certificates older than one year, please contact County Clerk Recorders Office office Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
