Safe & Legal Disposal of Home Generated Sharps

Beginning September 1, 2008, the California Medical Waste Management Act prohibits the disposal of home generated sharps in trash or recycling containers.

The Napa County Public Health Division is a no-cost collection location for sharps only:

  • Sharps must be transported in an approved sharps container, which may be obtained from a physician or pharmacy
  • A tightly sealed, leak and puncture resistant container with lid is an acceptable alternative
  • Please label container as “sharps”
  • Sharps transported in plastic bags or paper bags or other non-puncture resistant container will be refused
