Safe & Legal Disposal of Home Generated Sharps

Beginning September 1, 2008 (updated 7/1/2018), the California Medical Waste Management Act prohibits the disposal of home generated sharps in trash or recycling containers.

The Napa County Public Health Division is a no-cost collection location for sharps only:

  • Sharps must be transported in an approved sharps container, which may be obtained from a physician or pharmacy, or Napa County Public Health
  • Sharps transported in plastic bags or paper bags or other non-puncture resistant container will be refused
