1. What is In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)?

In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) is a Medi-Cal program funded by county, state and federal dollars. The goal of the IHSS program is allow low income aged, blind and disabled persons, who are at risk of out-of-home placement, to remain safely at home by providing payment for care provider services. 2. What services does the In-Home Support Services program provide?

Depending on the needs of a recipient, In-Home Support Services (IHSS) can pay care providers for:

• Domestic Services (housework, meal preparation and clean-up, laundry, food and errand shopping)
• Personal Care Services (bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, ambulation, feeding)
• Accompaniment to medical appointments and alternative resources (day programs)
• Paramedical Services, as ordered by a physician (help with injections, colostomy and catheter care)
• Protective Supervision

IHSS does not pay care providers for:

• General gardening or yard clean-up
• Feeding, cleaning up after or exercising a pet
• Moving or lifting heavy furniture or boxes
• Washing windows
• Transporting anyone but the recipient
• Paying bills

3. Who is eligible to receive In-Home Support Services?

An applicant must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien and a California resident
• Be aged (65 years or older), blind or have a permanent disability expected to last 12 months or more
• Receive Medi-Cal (with or without share of cost) or SSI / SSP benefits
• Be living at home. Home is any place the applicant chooses to live and could be a house, apartment, hotel or the home of a relative
• Be 'at risk' of out of home placement, such as a skilled nursing facility or board and care, if they do not receive In-Home Support Services
• Have a licensed health care professional complete a Health Care Certification form verifying the applicant needs In-Home Support Services
